How Coffee Habits Change Through the Seasons

How Coffee Habits Change Through the Seasons

For many of us, coffee is a daily ritual that sets the tone for the day. But how we enjoy it often shifts with the seasons. In Ireland, coffee culture often flows with the weather,  hot brews for crisp winter mornings, iced blends for sunny summer days, and endless ways to tailor your cup to the mood of the moment. Here, we explore how coffee habits can evolve throughout the year and share a few ideas to help you savour every season, one brew at a time. This is one of the things we love about coffee: there’s so much you can do with a simple bag of beans.

Winter

There’s something so stereotypically ‘winter’ about wrapping your cold hands around a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee. It's also the perfect season for cafes and coffee to experiment with their menu offerings by adding seasonal flavours like cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread or chocolate.

Classic brewing methods like the cafetière or slow drip are made for winter’s slower pace, perfect for cosy conversations and catch ups with friends and family.

It’s also the time when many rediscover the charm of a traditional Irish coffee — with or without a splash of whiskey — served warm and crowned with a layer of cream for that extra touch of indulgence. Nothing beats a solo coffee too for a well-deserved time out and if just making coffee for one then the Hario V60  brewer is the perfect way to make a coffee for one without any waste.

Spring

As the temperature starts to get warmer coffee preferences can begin to change.

Once upon a time, people added milk and sugar to coffee. Now they’re adding spirulina, collagen peptides, protein powder etc.  Spring often brings these kinds of trends to the forefront, as people look to honour their New Year’s resolutions and shake off the excesses of winter. Decaf coffee also tends to be especially popular early in the year.

Early in the year, we notice a surge of new coffee gear and gadgets in people’s homes, often the result of gifts received over the festive season. Investing in new brewing equipment can significantly improve your daily cup at home

Summer

When the weather gets warmer (well, as ‘warm’ as it is in Ireland), hot drinks can often take a back seat to iced coffee. Summer coffee habits shift toward refreshing and light, easy-drinking brews that help beat the heat. Iced coffees, cold brews, and frappés dominate menus and home kitchens alike, often paired with fruity or floral flavours that feel bright and energising.  There are so many creative ways to mix things up. Whether it’s an iced chai latte or an iced matcha latte, or a classic black iced coffee with vanilla, coconut, or hazelnut syrups, there is something for absolutely everyone.

Making an iced coffee is surprisingly easy; all you need is a glass with some ice cubes and your favourite ground coffee. Simply brew your FiXX the way you like, pour it over the ice and top with milk. Adventurous coffee lovers might want to try cold brew concentrate too, steeped in the fridge overnight for a super smooth, mellow cup.

Brewers such as the Aeropress Go are ideal for outdoor coffee rituals and activities.

Autumn

As the weather starts to change again and people get their knitwear back out, coffee habits tend to shift towards comfort and warmth.

In coffee shops, you know it's autumn when the pumpkin spice collections start appearing on menus. Other rich, indulgent flavours like maple and pecan make their way into classic flat whites and lattes during this season too, as people embrace the autumnal mood.

At home brewing rituals shift back indoors, there are lots of ways you can experiment at home.  At FiXX we have even created a signature coffee cocktail drink for this season.
