Frequently Asked Questions
At FiXX, we love helping you make better coffee at home. Great beans are only part of the story – how you brew them, how much you drink, and what you’ve heard about coffee and health all play a role.
This FAQ pulls together quick, no-nonsense answers to the questions we hear most from FiXX drinkers. From how much coffee is “too much” to whether you can still use that bag at the back of the cupboard, you’ll find practical advice you can actually use.
You’ll also see links to our glossary and products along the way, so if a term is new or a brewing style catches your eye, you can click through, learn more and find the FiXX coffee that suits how you like to drink it.
OUR COFFEE
IS OUR COFFEE FAIRTRADE?
At FiXX Coffee, we take a proactive and collaborative approach to ensuring our coffee supply chains operate ethically. We support the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI), which promotes respect for workers’ rights around the globe. We import UTZ certified coffee (which now includes Rainforest Alliance, RFA).
For our monthly Single Origin Specialty Graded coffees, we sometimes find FAIRTRADE partners to supply us. Simply put the coffee always has to taste great, and if produced by a FAIRTRADE affiliated supplier then that works for us.
Pay well, so the growers want to keep their standards high, support their families / communities and we in turn continue to source from them. It involves respect, recognition and an exchange of rewards, like any strong relationship.
WHY DON’T WE PUT A STRENGTH AGAINST OUR COFFEE?
Strength is an important term when discussing coffee but one that gets misused as it means different things to different people. It is often the only word that springs to people's mind when trying to describe a coffee and is commonly used as a marketing tool on retail coffee bags. What these companies are really trying to communicate is how dark the roast is, but instead they reference strength and grade it from 1 to 5. So they are talking to the consumer on one level but what is being interpreted is anyone's guess.
Strength is mainly determined by the ratio of ground coffee used to the volume of water. The more coffee used the stronger the coffee is more likely to be.
Strength is also determined by the brewing method and brewing extraction times. So in reality YOU as the coffee maker and drinker have complete control over the strength of the coffee.
Taste is a whole different topic...

COFFEE STORAGE
Does coffee expire?
Does coffee expire? Not exactly — coffee rarely becomes unsafe, but it certainly loses flavour and aroma over time. To maintain freshness, consider a few things.
- Storage matters: Keep coffee in airtight containers to limit exposure to light, heat, oxygen, and moisture and preserve freshness. You can learn more in this FiXX Blog all about coffee storage.
- Whole beans vs ground coffee: Whole beans stay fresh longer. In contrast, ground coffee loses flavour more quickly because more surface area is exposed to air/oxygen.
Freshness windows:
- Whole beans: Best used within a few months of opening, though unopened bags can last longer.
- Ground coffee: Best consumed within 1–2 weeks of opening for peak taste.
Signs of stale coffee include a flat or weak aroma, dull taste, and, in espresso, a lack of crema. To get the best experience, buy FiXX coffee in sizes you’ll use within a few weeks, and store it using our recommended tips or accessories. That way, every cup stays flavourful and aromatic.
Can I still use 2-year-old Coffee benas?
Technically, yes: coffee beans don’t suddenly become unsafe at some magic date. They’re very low in moisture, so if they’ve been stored somewhere cool and dry, away from obvious nasties, they’re unlikely to make you ill. But “safe to drink” and “tastes anything like good coffee” are two very different things.
Coffee is a fresh product disguised as a dry good. From the moment beans are roasted, they slowly lose the aromatic compounds and oils that make your kitchen smell amazing when you open a new bag. After a few weeks to a few months, you’ll notice a drop-off in aroma and complexity. After two years, even in decent storage, those beans are usually flat, papery, or just boring in the cup.
If curiosity strikes, brew a small batch of your 2-year-old beans and compare them side by side with a freshly roasted bag of FiXX Classic Coffee Beans. The difference in aroma, clarity and flavour will be pretty stark. For everyday drinking, especially if you care about taste, treating yourself to fresh beans is one of the easiest upgrades you can make – and your grinder will thank you too.
GENERAL COFFEE QUESTIONS
How much caffeine is in coffee?
Answering how much caffeine is in coffee is not straightforward. Mainly, though, it depends on how it is brewed. As a general guide:
- Espresso (single shot, ~30ml): around 60–75mg of caffeine
- Filter coffee (standard mug, ~240ml): around 80–120mg of caffeine
- Decaf coffee: typically 2–5mg per cup
When comparing caffeine in espresso vs filter coffee, espresso is more concentrated per millilitre, but a full mug of filter coffee usually contains more total caffeine because the serving size is larger.
For most healthy adults, up to around 400mg of caffeine per day (roughly 3–4 average cups of coffee) is often considered a sensible upper limit. However, anyone who is pregnant, sensitive to caffeine, or taking certain medications should speak with their GP about appropriate intake.
If you’re looking to reduce caffeine while still enjoying excellent flavour, consider choosing FiXX Decaf. Our Decaf coffee is a multi-award-winning blend that does not sacrifice caffeine for flavour. Great coffee should taste satisfying, whatever your caffeine preference.
How much coffee is in a cappuccino?
The answer to this question, unsurprisingly, depends on how it’s made — but most café cappuccinos follow a similar formula. A typical café cappuccino is made with one double espresso shot (approximately 30–40ml extracted from 16–20g of ground coffee), topped with steamed milk and a good layer of milk foam. At home, some people use a single shot, but most speciality cafés use a double as standard.
When considering grams of coffee per cappuccino, it’s important to remember that the strength comes from the espresso itself — not from the milk. The amount of ground coffee used in the portafilter basket (usually 16–20 grams for a double shot) determines the intensity and flavour. Adding more milk makes the drink larger and milder, but it does not increase the coffee content.
In terms of a classic cappuccino coffee to milk ratio, the traditional balance is roughly:
- 1 part espresso
- 2-3 parts steamed milk
- A good layer of milk foam on top
- Chocolate on top is optional.
You can read more about the history of the cappuccino here in our blog.
Does 1 tablespoon of coffee beans equal 1 tablespoon of ground coffee?
Sadly, no, your tablespoon is lying to you. One tablespoon of whole beans does not equal one tablespoon of ground coffee, because grinding changes how the coffee sits in the spoon. Ground coffee packs differently, and the finer you grind, the more it compresses, so the same amount of coffee can weigh notably more or less depending on grind size.
For casual brewing, spoons will get you in the ballpark, but they’re not great if you want your coffee to taste consistently good from day to day. Two “level tablespoons” from different bags or at different grind settings can easily yield different strengths in the cup. That’s why some days your coffee tastes perfect, and other days it’s strangely weak or uncomfortably intense, even though you swear you did the “same thing”.
A small digital scale fixes this in one go. Instead of scoops, you use a simple recipe such as 15g of FiXX coffee – for example, our Classic Ground Coffee – to 250g of water and repeat it every time. Once you’ve dialled in a ratio you like for your brew method, you can recreate that sweet spot with almost boring reliability – which is exactly what you want from your morning coffee.
To help with this kind of thing, we have a handy set of brewing guides by your brew method here - this is a great place to start. Then you can experiment with more or less coffee, water, or other bits and pieces for your morning coffee.
What do I need to always get the best cup of coffee at home?
Great home coffee isn’t magic; it’s a few basics done well. Start with freshly roasted, high-quality beans – this is where most of the flavour lives, so it’s the one place you don’t want to compromise. Storing your FiXX coffee, such as FiXX Classic Coffee Beans, in an airtight container away from heat, light and moisture helps protect flavour between brews.
Next up is grind size and consistency. Different brew methods need different grinds: coarse for French press, medium for most filter brewers, and fine for espresso-style methods. Knowing which grind size is best for your brewing style is an essential step towards delicious coffee. Luckily, this FiXX blog is all about grind size and can answer a lot of your questions.
Following a recipe is always a good idea. A good catch-all ratio is 60g of coffee to 1 litre of water. Lighter roast coffees can go up to 65g to 1ltr, while dark roasts can go to 55g to 1ltr.
Keep your equipment clean – old oils and residue can easily go rancid, affecting the flavour of your coffee. This FiXX blog is full of cleaning tips for different types of coffee brewers.
Finally, make one small change at a time so you know what’s working. With those simple steps, you’re well on your way to a quality FiXX at home.
How to make Turkish coffee?
Turkish coffee is where coffee meets theatre: rich, thick, and unapologetically intense. It starts with an ultra-fine grind – much finer than espresso – and a small long-handled pot called a cezve or ibrik. You add cold water, your finely ground coffee, and sugar (if you like it sweet) to the pot before you go near any heat.
A classic starting point is roughly one heaped teaspoon of coffee per small demitasse cup of water, but you can tweak this to taste. Stir everything together, then gently heat over a low to medium flame. As the mixture warms, a dark foam rises to the surface; just before it boils, take it off the heat, spoon some of that precious foam into each cup, then return the pot briefly to the heat to deepen the flavour.
When you pour, grounds and all go straight into the cups. Give it a moment to settle – Turkish coffee is meant to be sipped slowly, not knocked back. Don’t drink the last mouthful where the grounds sit; that’s like chewing the tea leaves. Use freshly roasted, finely ground FiXX coffee – such as beans from our Classic Coffee range, ground to a Turkish-fine setting – and you’ll get that syrupy, aromatic cup that Turkish coffee fans rave about.
COFFEE & HEALTH
Is drinking coffee good for your health?
For most people, drinking coffee in moderate amounts slots very comfortably into a healthy lifestyle. A common guideline is approximately 4 small cups of brewed coffee per day for healthy adults, which usually keeps you under the 400 mg caffeine limit. Coffee also brings along antioxidants and other naturally occurring compounds that can support overall health, so long as you’re not drowning them in sugar.
Large observational studies have linked regular coffee drinking with a lower risk of several chronic conditions, including some heart, liver and neurodegenerative diseases. That doesn’t mean coffee alone gets the credit – people who drink coffee also have diets, exercise habits and genetics – but it does undermine the old idea that coffee is automatically “bad” for you. If anything, moderate coffee intake seems pretty neutral to positive for most people.
There are caveats. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine and can experience anxiety, palpitations, digestive issues or poor sleep even at moderate intakes. If that’s you, it’s worth cutting back, avoiding late-day coffee, or rotating in a good decaf from the FiXX range when available. And if you have specific medical conditions, checking in with a healthcare professional about your ideal coffee range is a smart move.
The goal is simple: your daily FiXX should make your day better, not harder.
What is the healthiest way to drink coffee?
If you're wondering about the healthiest way to drink coffee, the good news is that it doesn't have to be complicated. For most people, coffee can absolutely fit into a balanced lifestyle.
The simplest way to drink coffee in a healthy way is to go easy on added sugar and syrups – flavoured syrups, whipped cream, and sweeteners can quickly turn coffee into a high-calorie drink.
At FiXX, we believe all of our award-winning coffees are smooth and balanced enough to enjoy black. But we've also crafted them so they pair perfectly with milk, without the need for added sugars or sweeteners, or any fuss. Many people find that black coffee, or coffee with a small splash of milk, strikes a great balance between flavour and calories. When the coffee itself tastes good, you don't need to add much to it.
If you have specific health considerations — such as pregnancy, heart conditions, anxiety, or acid reflux — it's always best to discuss your coffee habits with your GP. Individual tolerance can vary, and personalised advice is important.
Does coffee dehydrate you?
Coffee has a reputation for “drying you out”, but the science isn’t nearly as dramatic. Yes, caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, which means you might visit the bathroom a little more often. However, for regular coffee drinkers, the body adapts to caffeine, and studies show that moderate coffee intake does not cause dehydration and still counts towards your daily fluid intake.
Where things go wrong is when coffee is doing the heavy lifting for your entire hydration strategy. If you enjoy very strong coffees back-to-back, barely touching water, you may notice headaches, fatigue, or darker urine – that’s not the coffee being evil; it’s just not enough plain fluids overall. A very simple rule: enjoy your FiXX – whether that’s a bag of FiXX Classic Coffee or one of our single origins – and keep a glass of water handy too.
If you’re active, in a hot environment, or new to coffee, it’s worth paying a little extra attention to how you feel and adjusting your intake. For most healthy adults, a few cups of FiXX a day, alongside a decent water habit, is absolutely compatible with staying well hydrated.
How much coffee is too much?
The short answer: for most healthy adults, up to around 400mg of caffeine per day is considered a sensible upper limit. That works out at roughly four small cups of brewed coffee, depending on strength, serving size and how generous your "one cup" really is. A double espresso will have a lot of caffeine for its serving size. Still, a regular mug of filter coffee will have more caffeine, as it's usually a much larger size. So cup counting is always a bit fuzzy.
The more useful answer is to listen to your body, especially as everyone metabolises caffeine differently. If you're feeling wired, anxious, shaky, getting a racing heart, your caffeine intake might be too high for you – even if you're technically under 400mg. In that case, cut back slightly: go smaller, switch a couple of coffees to decaf (when available), and bring your last FiXX of the day earlier. For many people, having a cut-off time for coffee helps - so you can easily tell yourself no more coffee after 3pm, for example.
Some people need to be mindful: if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, managing heart issues, or taking certain medications, your safe limit may be significantly lower. That's when it's worth asking your doctor what's right for you. Coffee should feel like a daily ritual you look forward to, not something that leaves you buzzing in the wrong way.
Is black coffee good for you?
Black coffee on its own is naturally very low in calories. It contains no sugar or fat, which is already a decent start in the “good for you” column. It’s also rich in naturally occurring compounds, such as antioxidants, that help protect cells from everyday wear and tear. So if you enjoy the taste of your coffee without dressings, black FiXX – such as our FiXX Organic – is a simple, straightforward option.
Large population studies show that people who regularly drink moderate amounts of coffee often have a lower risk of several chronic diseases, including some heart and metabolic conditions. That doesn’t magically turn coffee into a medicine, but it does suggest you don’t need to feel guilty about a daily brew. As always, your overall lifestyle – what you eat, how much you move, how you sleep – matters more than any single drink.
The biggest trap isn’t the black coffee itself; it’s what can end up in the cup with it. Heavy-handed sugar, syrups and cream turn a simple coffee into a dessert pretty quickly. Keeping at least some of your daily FiXX coffees black (or lightly dressed) lets you enjoy the flavour of the beans – think of that rich crema on an espresso – while keeping the “extras” in check.
