SCAE World of Coffee Event – 22-24 June 2011

May 9th, 2011 No comments

The SCAE World of Coffee is being held in Maastricht (Netherlands) from 22 – 24 June 2011.  Here coffee lovers from the speciality coffee sectors, SCAE members, competitors from around the globe and coffee enthusiasts will come together to find out more about what is going on in the coffee world.

This event is also hosting 5 World Championships and so will bring together some of the most recognised coffee professionals under the one roof.

The competitions include:

World Brewers Cup: a brand new contest of hand-crafted filter coffee brewing skills.

World Latte Art Championship: highlights the art and craft of latte art: patterns and designs made atop cappuccino-style beverages.

World Cup Tasters Championship: Competitors are ranked by accuracy and speed in a series of triangulation tests. In a triangulation, the taster evaluates three cups of coffee, seeking to identify the odd cup.

World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship: entrants prepare rounds of cocktails combining coffee with spirits and liqueurs to determine the best coffee mixologist in the world.

World Cezve/Ibrik Championship:  A Cezve (also known as Ibrik) is a pot designed specifically to make a particular style of coffee that is vastly consumed in parts of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Competitors are required to prepare and serve three different sets of beverages, all the while performing an engaging presentation for the judges.

This year they are also introducing ” The Village”. This is an area designed like a market place and small theatre which will present the newest trends and companies within “micro roasting”.  These are mainly small internet based businesses who can target special customers precisely.  The Village aims to attract a new type of high end consumer looking for a unique coffee experience or for the coffee enthuasiast who is interested in roasting at home.

About 5000 people are expected to attend and it definitely looks like a show that is well worth visiting this year.

Well done to all the participants and finalists at the World Barista Championships 2010.  The title of World Barista Champion went to Michael Phillips from the USA who won from among 53 professional and champion baristas from all over the world.  A special congratulations to Ireland’s Champion Barista, Colin Harmon who took 4th place – well done Colin, your performance was outstanding and it was a pleasure to watch you in action.

Here are the listed winners:

2nd - Raul Rodas (Guatemala)
3rd – Scottie Callaghan (Australia)
4th – Colin Harmon (Ireland)
5th – Soren Stiller Markussen (Denmark)

You can also watch  the finalists in action and the champion announcement on live stream here

In the 2010 World Cup Tasters Championship, Hector Gonzalez of Guatemala was this year’s winner from amongst 37 other contestants.  Ireland’s continued to shine with David Walsh from theotherblackstuff, who came 2nd in the World Cup Tasters  – great to see David gaining a strong foothold in the coffee world in such a short space of time.

We really enjoyed Caffe Culture this year and believe hosting the World Barista Championship gave it an edge.  It was also a great opportunity to catch up with some of our suppliers, colleagues and old friends in the industry.  Next years competition will be held in Bogota, Columbia 2 -5 June 2011 and we hope to see you there!
