In just a few more days the World Barista Championship will take place in Bogota, Columbia 2-5 June 2011!

This is the first time the competition will be held in  a coffee producing country so it is a fantastic opportunity to be truly immersed in the coffee world. The competition will be hosted by the Colombian Coffee Federation and Speciality Coffee Association of Colombia and held within the 4th Annual Expoespeciales Trade Show.

Unfortunately we wont make it this year but we will definitely be tuning in to watch it on live stream.  You can also follow the twitter feed @WCoffeeEvents for plenty of up todate comments.

You can view this years competitor schedule here and dont forget the time difference of 6 hours …

Best of luck to Ireland’s representative Vicky Fitz-Henry – go Vicky, go!

Enjoy!

SCAE World of Coffee Event – 22-24 June 2011

May 9th, 2011 No comments

The SCAE World of Coffee is being held in Maastricht (Netherlands) from 22 – 24 June 2011.  Here coffee lovers from the speciality coffee sectors, SCAE members, competitors from around the globe and coffee enthusiasts will come together to find out more about what is going on in the coffee world.

This event is also hosting 5 World Championships and so will bring together some of the most recognised coffee professionals under the one roof.

The competitions include:

World Brewers Cup: a brand new contest of hand-crafted filter coffee brewing skills.

World Latte Art Championship: highlights the art and craft of latte art: patterns and designs made atop cappuccino-style beverages.

World Cup Tasters Championship: Competitors are ranked by accuracy and speed in a series of triangulation tests. In a triangulation, the taster evaluates three cups of coffee, seeking to identify the odd cup.

World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship: entrants prepare rounds of cocktails combining coffee with spirits and liqueurs to determine the best coffee mixologist in the world.

World Cezve/Ibrik Championship:  A Cezve (also known as Ibrik) is a pot designed specifically to make a particular style of coffee that is vastly consumed in parts of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Competitors are required to prepare and serve three different sets of beverages, all the while performing an engaging presentation for the judges.

This year they are also introducing ” The Village”. This is an area designed like a market place and small theatre which will present the newest trends and companies within “micro roasting”.  These are mainly small internet based businesses who can target special customers precisely.  The Village aims to attract a new type of high end consumer looking for a unique coffee experience or for the coffee enthuasiast who is interested in roasting at home.

About 5000 people are expected to attend and it definitely looks like a show that is well worth visiting this year.
